As the number of COVID-19 cases is dropping and vaccination rates are increasing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Biden Administration are expected to lift the pandemic-related public health order that has limited immigration since the start of the pandemic.

The pandemic-related public health order is expected to take effect in May, which will allow migrants to seek and request asylum once they reach the United States, the same way they were able to pre-pandemic.

Also, the lift of this order can result in a bigger surge of migrants along the southern border. Border officials had the authority, under the public health order, to expel any undocumented individuals who illegally crossed the border and even those who were seeking asylum from Mexico to the United States.

At the moment, it’s still not clear how the CDC will lift the public health order.
