Immigration Legal Services Program

During the 2015 calendar year:

  • Conducted over 690 consultations for prospective clients, at least 220 of which were for victims of abuse or other crimes
  • Opened 176 Family-Based cases
  • Opened 222 VAWA / U-visa cases (immigrant victims of violent crimes) for 228 individuals – certain cases contain several family members within the same file
  • Opened 136 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) cases
  • Opened 37 Citizenship and Naturalization cases
  • Opened 12 Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) cases

Retail Thrift Store and Emergency Aid Program

During the 2014 calendar year, examples of requests include:

  • A young mother and her two children stranded at a Las Cruces homeless shelter…
    • Assistance provided: Purchase of bus fares to Kentucky so they could be re-united with family
  • Recently employed and homeless father of two children awaiting his first paycheck…
    • Assistance provided: Funded a one-week stay at a hotel
  • Elderly widow who had fallen behind paying her winter electric bills and received a shut-off notice…
    • Assistance provided: Paid her electric bills and service was continued
  • Mother and young daughter who witnessed a homicide and whose lives were threatened for agreeing to testify in criminal court…
    • Assistance provided: Money provided for the family’s successful relocation out of the community
  • Homeless woman residing in a self-storage facility who was denied access to her unit because of unpaid bills…
    • Assistance provided: Paid delinquent bills, referral to a homeless shelter
  • Family from Anthony, New Mexico who were in need of food before they could provide blood to a Las Cruces blood bank in return for money…
    • Assistance provided: Retail store provided free food and clothing, referral to the New Mexico Department of Human Services
